Throw any "emergency" funds into a higher yield savings account (online banks), or a money market account. Checking accounts offer horrible interest rates (if any interest at all), and you should only be keeping enough in there for your basic monthly bills anyway. Of course, the simplest way to link that savings account is ETF...just make sure that the payments are only made on your say-so; don't sign up for automatic payments/withdrawals unless you can help it.
