Instead of sending the cable/phone/gas/whatever companies my bank account numbers, I just give the bank the account numbers for everything else, and then tell them to pay so-much to this account at this time. It's much easier, and you retain quite a bit more control, as the companies cannot just "withdrawal" from your account, avoiding some of the hassle with over-billing and other potential problems. And it's all on-line, so I never have to leave the comuter room... ;)
