I have no problem believing that journalists in general are left leaning, especially using US definitions of left and right, but the way they try to quantify that bias sounds dubious. They take a value assigned to a politician by an independent liberal lobbying organization, and then they transfer that value to a news outlet based on mention of think tanks and lobbying groups?

So if Fox News were to report that "Today the organization Mothers Against Guns demanded that toy guns should be outlawed since they might lure children to play with real guns, which is of course utter b4s4" (not that Fox would use those exact words, but I hope you get the drift), that would add a stone on the left side of the scale for them?

Being married to a Political Science major prevents me from saying anything about "soft science", but ...
