one time, it was with a hand, not a belt, and it was for my hitting them first. Aside from that, I was never physically disciplined at all.

I was raised, however. Sure, getting a suspension might be considered a status symbol, but being shut in your house every night for a week without being able to watch TV isn't. Getting pulled from playing sports isn't. It is entirely possible for parents to punish their own children without resorting to physical reprimands or making it into an issue of whether the family can afford to pay their delinquent child's "bad language" fines.

If the parents don't care to do that, I have no sympathy for them, but that doesn't make it the school's job (or the school's place) to put monetary pressure on them to be good parents.
