OUCH, I just crash-tested myself :( by Jeff_UK2005-12-19 05:59:04
Good you were wearing that helmet. by jdelphiki 2005-12-19 06:16:08
I don't ride, but the friends I know who have dumped their bikes have all been able to show me how the damage to their helmets might otherwise have been their own noggins.

One guy set his bike down crossing an odd-angle set of railroad tracks at a slow speed. His helmet wasn't ruined but the scratches in it would have made a nice dent in the upperside of his skull.

Another friend was bumped from behind going about 60mph by a drunk driver. Twice. My friend almost recovered from the first bump and the drunk tapped his back tire a second time. My friend laid his bike over and slid a couple hundred yards. The accident messed up his knee and pretty much shredded the jeans on one leg (didn't do much for the skin, either). But his helmet was completely worn through. He's lucky to have survived at all, but luckier that his helmet lasted as long as it did.

Anyhow, I'm glad you weren't hurt worse.
