The county my old high school is in now has a Suspension Center. I believe it is a paid for jointly by the schools in the county. If a student is suspended, he is required to show up at the suspension center for the day, so it's not just a "day off." I've never been there, so I don't know what goes on. I imagine they assign lots of busy work and keep the silence to a maximum. I'm sure that sleeping is right out.
