and it's been my experience that Word can NOT handle (a) documents larger than 125 pages, (b) running headers/footers that need to change with 2nd/3rd level headers and/or chapter titles, (c) generating indicies and TOCs is a major PITA.

Earlier versions were SO bad at these things (and yes, I was forced to use Word on more than one assignment, so I got it do DO all these things, but at a cost in human lives that was just terrible) that I refuse to look at that software for anything more than memos, letters and documents that are short or do not require any fancy headers/footers beyond simple "doc title" and page numbers.
