The species in question is the Greater Bird of Paradise, Paradisea apoda. The reason is, when European explorers came to New Guinea, they'd reward aboriginals they met for bringing them birds. These'd then be skinned, and the skin (with feathers) would be prepared and sent back to Europe. However, during the skinning, the legs would be cut off; hence the belief of researchers in Europe that Birds of Paradise had no legs.
