ANZAC... cookies by BuggedEyes 2005-12-06 09:29:19
Recently I came across a package of VFW/ANZAC cookies from UNIBIC. Proceeds to VFW etc... old WWII recipe that wives and families of Australian and New Zealand service men overseas baked for morale and fund raisers.

Not knowing how ubiquitous of a commodity they were or weren't, I picked them up to try.

1st bite and the sugared coconut base transports me back to my early childhood where my mother would drag me to Homemaker meetings with her peers where they would serve each other little icing cookies, cakes and macaroons that tasted an awful lot like these ANZAC cookies. Every lady had some sugared coconut cookie recipe that they served on these little tea plate/platters with the icing/marzipan cookies.

Eating the ANZAC cookies got me to wondering about their recipe boxes and how many of these ladies were serving delicacies that they'd learned 30 years prior?

Anybody else out there think of something that they were exposed to as a child that uses ingredients that aren't really popular today?

Doesn't have to be something you like, while I like coconut, I've always hated the sugared kind, but eating the cookies gave me a childhood moment back.

Just curious...
