...you'll probably want to leave your shoes at the door ;-)
Not always though, some swedes are getting more international. To get a general feel for Sweden you could take a look at http://www.thelocal.se, especially their message board. Also, see http://www.sweden.se - look under "Sweden and Swedes"
Bring a gift to the hosts! Wine, souvenirs, flowers - just bring something.
Be on time - not that we are always punctual, but we expect everyone to be...
We are very good at not discussing politics and/or religion if there might be cause for conflict - and if you are american, that's a pretty safe bet (unless you are a "Dirty Liberal Defeatist(tm)"). I find most swedes fall in one of two categories - the largest is "Americans are stupid, and Bush is the best example", the other is "America is so great, I'm gonna move there or make Sweden the 51st state"
You should know about "Jante's Law" - "jantelagen". Swedes generally do not put themselves forward, and you are not allowed to tell others of how good you are. It's OK to glorify others, but not yourself, and if you do tell a swede you're really great at this or that, s/he will at best think you are bragging, and at worst think you are only bragging ("if you are so good, why do you have to tell me?"). Modesty is a prized virtue in Sweden.
Oh, and we don't have polar bears ;-) |
