Question re. copyright law by nix2005-11-29 14:34:10
Is the presentation about the movie? by basher202005-11-29 14:39:04
    That's not my understanding by Arachnid2005-11-29 14:51:13
correct, unless it's a derivative work by unjust 2005-11-29 14:56:02
i.e. sampling anothers song/drum loop w/o payign for it and using it commercially is bad, however, if you're using a work in an unrelated matter, and it's not a critical part of the work, it's ok.

in this case, if you were being paid to discuss the movie, you would probably want to secure permission to use stills, or if you were publishing the speech with illustrations, but just referencing it as a background image for a powerpoint presentation probably isn't needed, provided that you do note appropreiate copyright info for it (typically at the end of your notes, or end of presentation in small but legible print)
