ATTN: Wheresthefish / any aircraft experts? by Jeff_UK2005-11-29 13:04:28
Sheesh, beats me. by wheresthefish 2005-11-29 13:16:35
You'll get a tyre failure before anything metal snaps off as they're designed to withstand some immense forces during touchdown. The tyres are designed with blowout plugs that let them deflate safely in the event of excess pressure or temperature, I'd say that would happen at a ground speed somewhere in excess of 200mph depending on side-loading due to crosswinds etc.

Ballpark "safe" (i.e. shouldn't completely fail but no guarantee of servicability after) landing speeds for a widebody jet with no flaps will be in the 180 Knot region, Concorde probably landed at that speed on a regular basis though.
