| Software RAID-1 problem |

I've got two 160GB disks, using mdadm for two RAID1 mirrors (/dev/md0: /dev/sda1 & /dev/sdb1, /dev/md1: /dev/sda2 & /dev/sdb2)
/dev/md0 is to be mounted at /home, /dev/md1 is to be mounted on /var. Both /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 are formatted ext2.
During boot, I get the following:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0
After booting without /home or /var (errors occur because of missing /var), I can run 'mdadm -A /dev/md0' and 'mdadm -A /dev/md1' and then mount /home and /var and use them normally.
What I want to do is figure out why this isn't a problem to do manually, and why this doesn't happen automatically at boot. Suggestions?
Thx,
