| Crowds in general bother me... |

It's a simple anxiety trigger here. I tend to dress "against" the crowd I'm in, so the people I'm with can find me more easily if I get lost (if I get lost I quickly become a gibbering mess). Dressing against the crowd also helps with competing for attention ;)
Even in a smallish or medium sized group I have trouble getting in on the conversation though. My SO has an odd strategy for that: when he arrives at a party with lots of people he doesn't know, he'll say something totally outrageous/stupid just to mess with people's heads. The crowd immediately divides into a snobby "Who is THAT idiot?!" vs. those with a sense of humor, or at least enough sense to see what his game is. He then knows not to bother with the former group, and the latter group are probably the interesting ones to talk to.
I wouldn't recommend this strategy for everybody, but it works for him. He also has a cast-iron ego. Your mileage may vary. |
