I've found that it's not an aversion to people, it's a problem with competition. When at a party, or club, or something, you have to compete for attention. To get in on a conversation, you have to time your responses properly and often get drowned out or interrupted by someone else who thinks they had their thought first, or actually started talking first. In the case of the tie, it's the person to which everyone else's head turns to that gets to keep talking. It sucks.
When you're giving a speech, all the attention is on you. There is no competition. You have their undevided attention, for the most part, and they're waiting for you to speak. |
