I'm a fairly strong introvert as well, as you may have noticed (under the accoung tnglives). Thanksgiving and the 5 family members (plus the 15-year-old's girlfriend... 0.o) who stayed at our house for 6 days gave me cause to reflect.
How are you at multitasking? I've found that it's not large groups that bother me, it's distributing attention. If there are one or two kids and not much of a crowd around, I'm their favorite uncle... I listen to them and don't mind hurting myself a bit to keep them out of (or into, as the case may be) trouble. But you get a loud crowd in the room, and I spend most of my energy blocking out the noise, and may be a bit snappish.
Similarly, I can handle a speech or classroom setting quite well. I don't mind getting up in front of 30 or so people, or handling questions in some kind of order. I've only spoken as part of the audience Q&A in larger groups, but I expect I could handle that too. Paying attention to an organized presentation presents no problem at all. But put me with the same group of people in a party, and I'll tend to retreat.
I get overwhelmed by huge to-do lists, too. I have to spend a lot of time identifying and prioritizing tasks, and take a frequent relaxation days, if I want to do anything more than damage control.
I rather wonder if working at multitasking would also improve the social aspect. I'm just a bit too lazy to find out. :-) |
