Canadian Ufies Politics thought. by techi8702005-11-25 12:23:27
The opposition parties don't have it easy these by Peace_man 2005-11-25 14:25:09
days. They can't complain about the government giving billions of excess tax dollars to the people - they'd have to say what they wanted to do with them instead:-) And since Martin promised to hold an election as soon as Gomery had issued his report - predicted to be sometime in February - they will look like impatient power grabbers if they force a vote.

And they don't want to force an election just before Christmas, either. The timing of such an election means a likely low voter turnout, and that has traditionally favoured the incumbent. So they have two choices: Do something that is against Canadian voters' interest, and their own (force an election) or wait until the Gomery inquiry exonerates Martin's government. Which means that they will have to find some other mud to sling - and that could be very difficult.

At least now we know where they stand. When forced to choose between two bad choiced, Jack Layton and Stephen Harper will choose to act, not to wait.

Anything else they may do in the future is still shrouded in mystery, and veiled in promises.
