(okay, that was a little corny)
I won't debate the merits of whether TV has helped society as a whole or not, because that's a very subjective discussion. but i will say that the BBC provokes intelligent thought on many issues through it's programming.

For instance, much of the idea of the Live Aid benefit concerts came from a BBC documentary on the crisis in Ethiopia.

It isn't perfect, but the BBC is charged with doing the best it can with the mediums it uses (TV, Radio, and Web) without getting twisted by the demands of veiwing revenues.
