    My mom had a cockatoo... by wolfhound668 2005-11-25 06:30:51
That could mimic both of her dogs and the cat perfectly. Not just the barks and meows, the whines and purrs as well. (I often wonder exactly how close the cat had to be for the bird to pick up the purr. :)

Darn thing only picked up two phrases over the decade+ that she had him though, "I'm a good boy" and "go night night". Those sounded like a bird trying to talk and you really had to know what he was saying to understand it. When he imitated one of the other animals you couldn't tell the difference. There were many times I went to the living room to see what one of the dogs was barking about only to find the cockatoo sitting there on his perch looking smug.

She also had a parrot but that one never learned to talk, as well as a cockateal that just peeped and squeeked.

Yeah, we called her house "The Zoo". Some sort of weird trait in the females in her family. Here's how prevailent the trait is: For years my mom and her sister didn't speak (falling out after grandma died). When they finally started speaking to each other again my mom had all of the animals mentioned above, my aunt had five dogs and two cats. My sister, carrying on the weird trait, had three cats in her two bedroom condo.
