It's still got some competition from "Sinterklaas", but especially taking those two together commercialism is getting a stronger grip on it. Same goes for valentine's day, and even halloween is starting to get noticed here.
So around the end of september you can already get the candy associated with Sinterklaas, which immediately after 5th december is exchanged for lots of Christmas stuff (and in some stores even long before).
And if you think Sinterklaas sounds a lot like Santa Claus, you're right. He wears red clothes and a long beard, and has gifts for kids who've been good. He's not so fat though, rides on a white horse, lives in Spain, and has helpers with black skin (either because they are born that way, or because of the soot of the chimneys they move through to deliver the presents). |
