Here's your chance to beat plblark by plblark2005-10-06 18:26:16
Walking is good to start... by daswife 2005-10-06 20:43:01
...but you may want to eventually pick up speed. Jogging/running gets the job done just a little bit faster. :) If you go to the Cool Running website they have a training program called "Couch to 5k" that is really good about slowly working your body up to running. It works well because (if you follow it) it forces a person to take it slowly and not immediately beat-up their knees, shins and etc. Walking a mile burns almost the same amount of calories as running a mile, but if you walk a 15 min/mile you get less than 3 miles in your 40 minute window, if you can work up to 10 min/mile running, you're up to 4 miles in that same 40 minutes. (Okay, running freak part finished)

To help your back I recommend Pilates. The exercises focus on your abdominals and your "core" muscles and can be a true lifesaver when it comes to back pain. I can vouch for the Gaiam Pilates workout DVDs--both mat style and on the exercise ball. If you don't want to jump into that immediately, I still recommend getting one of the big exercise balls and using it both the stretch the lower back and to do abdominal crunches (actually there are a whole lot of weight bearing exercises that work well on it, if you are interested in hearing more, let me know).

Okay, I have probably rambled enough. I could talk at length about all the stuff I did to rid myself of the extra 40+ pounds I'd been dragging around, but suffice to say that my back has been the happiest it's been in ages.
