SUV versus Van/Minivan by merlin2005-10-06 11:54:23
The differences are blurry, but by basher20 2005-10-06 12:51:34
as far as styling, look at where the driver's feet are in relation to the front wheel wells. In a minivan, the driver's feet will pretty much rest on the outside back of the wheel well. In an SUV, there will be some distance between them.

This comes originally from the fact that early SUVs used larger engines mounted axially (drive shaft along long axis of vehicle) feeding into the 4WD transfer case, while minivans used smaller engines mounted transversely and connected to a front transaxle assembly.

The other difference used to be that SUVs were built on truck chassis while minivans were built on car chassis, but that divverence has largely dissapeared.

We now have a world where there are four-wheel drive minivans and front-wheel drive SUVs. It is truly mostly a matter of styling and marketing.
