The way I understand it (I'm no expert), is that the client side evaluates where the bullet would have hit if you had zero ping. It doesn't always work perfectly, but the hit registry is supposed to work with what YOU see, not what the server sees when it gets your information regardless of ping. It's easily the best anti-lag netcode out there for any game, but does result in things like killing people that have just run behind a wall.

The higher your ping on the server is, the more pronounced the effect is.
