All the below being said I am suprised by demonhedge 2005-10-06 12:25:50
that the peering incident hasn't come up in the comments yet. It does lead to some very ugly speculation regarding where the internet could be headed.

I use Cogent at the office and it has been giving me nightmares all day...why is it because you can't reach msn suddenly our 'internet server' is broken?!?

But back to what I was saying, if a Level 1 ISP decides it can make money by using the peering agreement they could in reality hold portions of the internet itself hostage from the customers of rival ISP's until the rival paid a handsome sum or the rivals customers decided to sign on with the ISP blocking the peering.

This could also very easily lead to ISP censorship which is even a worse scenerio in my ever so humble opionion.
