critical unless this is in a deeply nested part of the code, at which point when performance becomes an issue, it can be addressed, yes? The code is easy to understand, and works.

I admire the original function for coding _cleanly_ (resource wise).

But on my own behalf, thanks for the links! I think I'll poke around.
