if you like, I can suggest some books so you can understand (and think) better on the subject. One example is Accelerated C++ (koenig & moo) has examples on using stringstreams, the boost library (boost.org) has a boost::lexical_cast, the implementation is opensource for your peruse, and I think bjarne and josuttis also give good examples for the use of stringstreams and you need to understand when to use the expensive allocation scheme of new and when to allocate on stack. Get some work experience, etc.
