what it does it decided at compile time. If the template argument (decided by the return value you assign to) is float, it does something which is implementation defined (not defined in the standard), it might be casting or it might be solving a polynomial of fourth order, who knows. You can read the iostream related source and see what gnu libstdc++ does, for example.
