Aid Request: Time/Freq displays & data signals by theanomaly2005-10-04 10:12:06
Maybe a B8ZS or similar encoding scheme. by OddParity 2005-10-05 13:22:47
B8ZS stands for bipolar eight-zero substitution (or something like that), and is used sometimes to maintain a stable short-term mean/DC voltage or to differentiate long stretches of zero bits from a total loss of signal. Whenever the data stream calls for eight sequential bits to be all zeros, a code violation is transmitted in place of the eighth zero bit.

Consider an AMI signal:
+000-+-00000000+-+-0+0-+00

The marks are alternately encoded as "+" and "-", while the zeros are encoded as "0".

If using B8ZS, the same signal would read:
+000-+-0000000-+-+-0+0-+00

Notice that the eighth consecutive zero is sent as a "-" which violates the AMI scheme, because the previous mark was sent as a "-".
