All the PCI cards I've used have had the external antenna. The whole idea of hanging an antenna out the back of a computer just boggles my mind. I haven't had your experience with the USB's... they've always worked plugged right in... but, thinking about it, I've always elevated them somewhat. The PCMCIA card setups generally just work (I have one that is cranky at the moment, but I think the card is about shot).
