when it is plugged directly into the PC it is terrible and when you put it on an extension and lift it up it wors fine. I have also seen the reverse. It all depends on the location and the type of NIC/router combo you are using and what the encryption/security protocols you are using.

As a general rule the I have found the PCI cards that do not have an external antenna to have problems connecting if they are a "decent distance" away from the WAP, I.E. several rooms. Funny part of that is the same manufacturer in a PCMCIA/PC card setup with no external antenna works fine. Go figure (shrugs) you are dealing with radio waves and they are fickle things ;)
