...is based soley on rational judgments, or is morally above reproach? Are other nations' foreign policies and trade policies selfless? Heck no.

Take the beam out of your own eye, and all of that. I think a lot of the defensiveness comes from the feeling that we're being singled out. Hearing "do as we say, not as we do" gets tiresome for anybody.
