Try and find out what brand wheel it is, if possible, and contact the manufacturer. Or see if you can find a wheel that's comparable in size and ratios and buy its replacement belt and use that-- belts aren't scientific when it comes to wheels.
The tension on the belt matters of course, but it's actually less important than you might think. My Lendrum has two stretchy plastic belts-- one for most of my flyers, and one for plying. The plying bobbin is much larger than the regular bobbins, so it needs about 2 extra inches of belt. But the other flyers have ratios that vary quite a bit, and I've successfully used the other belt with the plying bobbin-- I just didn't leave it on there for very long because it really is quite tense.
However, the entire head can be moved up or down in relation to the wheel (there's about 3 inches of leeway) on my wheel, so the tension can vary based on how high or low I decide to put the head on at that particular day. This is how I conclude that the tension has a decent margin for error.
So, as long as the belt fits the wheel and flyer (i.e., it's not shaped funny), isn't so loose that it slips, and isn't so tight it feels like it'll snap, it should work. My advice is to measure the total length of the belt's path and buy a replacement belt that's close to that length, try it out, and see if it works. |
