the center of mass of the planetary system follows an elliptical orbit in near proximity to the plane of the ecliptic around the stellar body, I think that would be sufficient for purposes of clssification.

Now, let's add some real headaches. What about planetary systems orbiting the center of mass of a binary star (c.f. Niven and Gerrold's The Flying Sorcerers), or Kempler rosettes (c.f. Niven's Known Space collection, Ringworld series -- the Puppeteers' homeworld system)?
