Well - face it. It is part of clear communication. If an astronomer doesn't know exactly what another astronomer means by saying 'planet' then clear communication is more difficult.

Personally, I think they should categorize bodies in the Solar system by type - planetoid, jovian, asteroid, cometoid etc. And by orbit - planetary, cometary, satellite, possibly non-ecliptic?

This way Earth would be a planetary planetoid. The Moon would be a satellite planetoid. Jupiter would be a planetary jovian, etc.

Clear as mud?
