so what IS a planet? by unjust2006-11-19 12:55:59
  I like the following criteria by Control 2005-10-04 08:05:13
A planet is a body which
1) directly orbits a star
2) has enough mass to form itself to a near spherical shape
3) occupies it's own orbit, or compromises more mass than the combination of other bodies with comparable orbits.

Obviously, #3 needs clarifying what a 'comparable' orbit is. The main asteroid belt for example should all fall into one such comparable orbit.
