It was like they couldn't decide if they were doing a straight update or a spoof. I'll bet it started as a straight update, but some executive who thought it was a Gilbert O'Sullivan remake, demanded they work in more laughs. That's the only excuse I can think of for the utterly nonsensical, unrelated to anything else in the movie pie-fight ending.
It was a product of the very short lived post-"Grease" attempt to revive the movie musical. There were a lot of dismal films around then, like the Pirate Movie, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", and even one by the Village People whose title (fortunately?) escapes me.
Although the geek-girl look on Kristy McNichol was pretty hot to me as a 12 year old. |
