ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 by merlin 2005-09-12 18:27:04
So, somehow, someway I ended up with a piture-viewing software called "ViewPoint" on my system, and it apparently phones home to check for updates. Today it found an update and automatically downloaded and installed it.

After the main program updated, I received one of those WinXP floating popups demanding my attention. It notified me that the update had occured and that ViewPoint recommended I download and install a "browser update" to "enhance my online experience." It also said that by downloading and installing their update I was agreeing to their TOS, which I did not bother to go read.

However, there was only one button on the popup: Update. There was no button saying Cancel, Never Mind, Take a Flying Leap, or even Emulate a Lemming.

I checked under Processes and Applications in Task Manager and could not find out how to kill.

Short of rebooting my system, which I don't think would have worked, I had no choice to click Update. I was silently hoping that I would receive an installation dialog I could cancel but no joy. It installed stupid toolbar on my browser (only IE, thank goodness; FF was not affected).

Fortunately, there was an entry in Add/Remove and it appears that I was able to get rid of the stupid thing. After it uninstalled I was automatically taken to a "feedback" page in my browser. I wish I had saved the text, but I sent in a scathing email lambasting their installation program and basically consigning them to the 9th circle.

*grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*
