The margins on the old fields are too small for the big boys but can still float small companies nicely, as long as prices stay high.

I remember also reading that many American wells shut down when oil falls below a certain price (IIRC, $45/barrel) because they can't meet operating costs on their small scale. At $60+ a barrel, I'll bet they are all working pretty hard right now.
