Back in the day (early 80's) when I was in Palm Springs, the city put in a CoGeneration system - it was going to kick out some electricity to the net. There was a huge disagreement between the city and the power co on the value of the electricity put back into the net. The power co wanted to use the cost of production in LA, the city wanted to use the cost of production in LA, AFTER transmission to PS. IIRC, it was a factor of 4, i.e., they lost 75% of the energy over around 100 miles of wire. (might be off here) The point is that moving energy over wires is fast but over distance, not efficient.
