And you just provided prime example of it: "Look, California has a lot of people living in it. Why would we relax the very laws that make it nice for us to continue to live here?"

In life there are trade-offs. You can supplement with alternative sources, but your capacity has to match your population- and California's growth far outstrips its capacity. Even if you put solar panels on every house and office building, it's a Band-Aid solution: you'll have to replace your power plants eventually.

Great potential for wind power around the Great Lakes. But the people who can afford property near the lake don't want to deal with wind power- you see the same hypocrisy on the east coast. Solar power may be a nice stopgap on capacity issues (summer brown-outs, anyone?), but it's only practical in the Sun Belt- those of us in the dark and cloudy North are not going to see as much benefit.
