LA Blackout by VivianC2006-11-19 12:55:59
  A non-biased question by Kickstart2005-09-12 13:41:03
Well, how about a non-biased suggestion from the o by mortaine 2005-09-12 14:10:04
from the other side (from those you got already).

Too much centralized infrastructure. If every community had distributed power, for instance (i.e. small plants, wind power, solar power, etc.), large-scale infrastructure problems would be lessened, and we would have a stronger infrastructure. Additionally, there would be more "room" for infrastructure, as most people don't object to a discreet solar panel on their rooftops, for instance.

This doesn't answer the question of why LA lost power, but neither do Vivian's or DR66's answers, since LA lost power when a power line was cut.

We are all hosed when the sewage/garbage infrastructure goes out. Again, distributed infrastructure helps. If you can reduce the amount of garbage going to your local landfill by composting all of the uneaten vegetable matter your household produces, you can reduce your garbage output by about a bag a week. Even better if you can also use reusable/recyclable materials, and if you use more biodegradable packaging. If everyone did that, we would have less need for major waste management operations.
