(My personal guess is that this is because its swift and powerful flight is reminiscent of the fast-running princess in question.)

You're right about it being related to the monarch: they're both members of the fritillary family. I think the one you photographed is a female; males have a short diagonal streak of pheromone scales on their forewings near the joint, as you can see on this picture.
