I've taken a look at the kernel sources, and read about the GCC 4.0 problem. It does appear to be a problem in the kernel source. However, if I understand correctly, GCC 3.4 should accept it anyway.

When you installed GCC 3.3 and 3.4, did you uninstall 4.0, and if not, are you sure that it wasn't used anyway?
