enough, it *will* (eventually) quit restarting itself.

Maybe. (I did this once with a misbehaving Debian Sarge test box. It took a while to get to the point where I interrupted the restart process in such a way as to actually generate an error that would prevent it from trying again. This may have been during the tail end of the install process, too. YMMV.)

You may be better off to reboot to single-user mode, and do what needs doing.

Offhand, I don't know of any way to forcibly kill X when it's been set as the default runlevel unless you can force it into erroring out while it's initializing. This is a BIG problem if youve got incorrect settings making a hash of your display...
