Question for the image/ghosting litterate... by sloth_guy2005-09-12 00:46:01
Been there, do that BUT by DeskTop_Ron 2005-09-12 01:37:16
I have used both ghost in several flavors, and Drive Image from Partition Magic to copy multiple partitions and whole drives. Also, Maxtor hard drives come with a utility to do the same. All of them are capable of expanding the partitions on the fly to fit a larger hard drive.

What none of them will do for you, however, is load the drivers for new systems, especially video cards and network cards.

With 98 (and just moving a hard drive) I had some luck by cleaning out all temp crud, deleting all devices, and then booting back up when I had a cd of the new systems' drivers ready to load. Most loaded software worked, but I think I pulled this off about 10 times in 12 tries.

With 2k, I think I only pulled this off once in 7 or 8 tries. What I did for 2k is again clean off everything of a temp nature. I also only had one user account on it. I booted off of something independent, like Knoppix or something, and deleted the .dat files in the account, which effectively means I wiped out the whole registry. When 2k booted back up, it acted like a fresh install. One problem with this is most programs will have a hard time running, although if you reload them over themselves, it mostly worked and retained the data. I emphasize this only worked once in several attempts.

It also helped that the systems were very similar. In contrast, over the last three years, we have been using Dell GX series computers at work. I currently deal with GX260, GX270 and GX280. NONE of these images will run at all on any but there own platform. The crash is so hard, that I have had to start from scratch each new generation.

After review, I want to add that on systems where I used this approach as a back up, with multi boot system, Drive Image did restore to a new hard drive in the same system flawlessly. As always, ymmv. Good luck.
