PostgreSQL vs MySQL by notdeadyet2005-09-11 13:54:25

Sure, I play with it from time to time. by Myke 2005-09-12 00:12:23
Usually only because someone else needs help with it tho.

Why would I switch to MySQL, which is only getting around to adding some pretty important features, if it doesn't give me anything of benefit?

Your argument appears to be largely "MySQL does that too", and what I'm trying to point out is that they haven't support it for long, much of it is non-compliant or just too new to actually build an application that DEPENDS on integrity. In the land of databases - new features aren't something one would depend on... not for a while.

I have no problem running a very large corporate DB on Postgres or Oracle... I'd fight for a long time to stay away from MySQL - it's just too new. I *might* even take MSSQL over it... tho the Leafs might actually win the cup and Satan buys skates.. but anyway ;)

Of course, if you're just playing with these things, play with both (and then some... like Firebird and BDB and all that jazz, maybe even MSSQL and DB2 if you can get demos), be sure to see what's different.

Fz there is complaining about difficulties setting MySQL up, which I've experienced too... sure installing it is easy, but those first few steps of creating the DB and adding users and permissions is just strange. Not impossible tho.

Postgres makes that much simpler, install, initdb, start, psql -d template1 and create a user, you're good to go. And it tells you what to do... one doesn't need any docs to get it running.

In the end, I just can't see why anyone would pick MySQL over Postgres... ('cept for existing application support, which makes it a non-option.)
