In THIS case, why are you picking on the Federal government? On Geaorge Bush in particular? If you KNOW that the screwup at the local and state level was just as bad (much worse IMO), then why are you focusing on Bush? Ditto in Iraq, you KNOW that the insurgents are killing more civilians than coalition troops are, and that they're doing it on purpose, yet you ignore that and instead count how many civilians have been killed by our forces.
The thing that *I* am trying to do (and, obviously, I cannot speak for all left-wingers, but I suspect many have similar or identical motives) is get people to understand and acknowlege that the Federal Government did and does have some responsibility that they need to own up to. I'm just as irritated with the mayor and governor for not deploying the sixteen thousand or whatever school buses that are now coral habitats, but so is everyone else. We don't need to argue about whether or not they're at fault, because we agree they're at fault.

"Why can't you agree that person A is at fault too?"

"Why can't YOU agree that person A is at fault too? Huh?"

"...I'll knock your block off!"

See? It's just silly.

Asking someone to acknowlege something that they seem to be utterly denying, on the other hand, is a far more reasonable justification for having an argument:

"Why can't you agree that person B is also responsible?"

"Because he's not, for X, Y, and Z reasons!"

"X, Y, and Z don't apply because of P, Q, and R, you son of a silly person!"

"...LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

Nu?
