which is from my father and my SO (not direct), a citizen's idea of 'legal reality' is VERY different from that of the military. Not COMPLETELY different, but different -- in other words, first and foremost is obeying orders, as you indicated. However, "Special Forces" or other 'elite' have something more efficient than mere legality ... it's called a code of honor. Pity the laypeople don't get that.
