Best dead-wood RPG continued... by Mr.Taco 2005-09-11 01:50:54
That depends on your preferences.

If you want serious role-playing with a high amount of detail Role Master, dangerous Journeys and Pendragon might be to your taste. If it's fastpaced action and quick combat rules you like, then I would recommend the old D&D or the old Star Wars from West End Games.

On the other hand, the best funny rpg's in my book is Toon (mentioned yesterday) and Paranoia. Paranoia has got to be the most hilarious game I ever played - without exception. :-D

GURPS (General Useless Role Playin System ;-) )is a very thorough and versatile game that can be tailored to your own taste and needs. In that respect it's unsurpassed.

Storyteller is the best 'diceless' system out there as far as I know. Diceless means a game where you don't used dice at all. You only use your imagination.

The new D&D 3rd Ed. is also a great addition to the genre since the originals age tends to show now. It's wasn't complex enough for my taste but was good as an introduction RPG.

If you're into sci-fi Mechwarrior (placed in the BattleTech universe), Star Wars, Star Trek, Traveller and Space Master (Role Master in space) are very good choices.

Other notable RPG's are :
- Twilight 2000 from GDW, where you play soldiers in the aftermath of WWIII. It takes place in a post-nuclear-war Europe and there are many possibilities to live out your childhood dreams of playing soldier.

- Boothill from TSR, where the players are cowboys in the old Wild West. It can be combined with the Gunslinger board game to great effect.

- Sovereign Stone. This game was made by Larry Elmore, which most RPG veterans would know as one of the greatest illustrators and artists in the industry. A 'great old one' in fact. ;-) The game takes place in a fantasy world, but many of the usual fantasy conventions are turned upside down. Orcs are a seafaring race and dwarves live like nomads on the steppes. Makes for a very interesting setting if you want to see something entirely new.

Hope someone have gotten some ideas to try out a new game now. I just wanted to add my two-cents since I have played so many different games. That's why I continued the thread from yesterday. ;-)
