We can't be everywhere at once. by esbita 2005-08-16 17:33:18
The fact that we're not in a place YET does not necessarily mean that we don't consider it worthwhile. You "imply" an awful lot. Must be convenient leaving yourself so much wiggle room. Why don't you just come out and say what you mean? Indulge an ignorant, stupid American. :P

The stance I took is consistent. I said that military action was justified in Iraq for the abuses there, and I said the same thing about Sudan. So take the h-word somewhere else.

As it is, we're sort of stretched thin already between Afghanistan and Iraq. And I stand by my statement that those who would criticize us not going to a given place SOON enough to help... well I don't think we're stopping any nation who wants to put in effort stabilizing Sudan.

Let's start by defining what we mean by "stable." To me, "stable" means that a nation's citizens are living in reasonable security, and are not being terrorized by their government or other ethnic groups.

Unfortunately, much of the Hussein regime's "true nature" was suppressed for a long time, and it certainly doesn't fit the definition I give above:

But you don't seem to give a rat's rear end what is happening to people unless it spills over outside that country. Consider what Saddam has done to the Kurds, who just *happen* to reside on oil rich land. That "no-fly zone" that so offends Saddam's sovreignty also hinders efforts against the Kurds.

An interesting little dossier on Saddam's excesses.

On to Sudan: Unfortunately, any action in this region is being roadblocked with political posturing. Instead of definitive action, Rice is letting the African Union play in the sandbox and make mudpies. Whether the UN gets involved or not, this is going to be Srebrenica all over again. Haven't we learned in Iraq that the threat of sanctions just isn't credible?

But hey, you're going to damn the US if we act unilaterally, yet if we leave it to diplomacy, you'll damn us for sitting on our hands.
